Weekending September 10th:

The gateway entrance has now been drawn and digging has commenced to find the structure that was indicated by the resistivity geophysics.

The area is very complex and has a number of linear ditched features either side of a roadway.  The central area has been cleared of tumbled masonry in an attempt to locate any structures.  The ditches are being sampled and slots are being inserted to understand the chronology of the site.

The ditch running north of the gate has revealed some interesting evidence.  A wall may have tumbled into the ditch from the east.  Among the debris a small column has been found (below).

In the ditch running southwest from the entrance a fragmentary knife was found.  The iron knife had a bone handle decorated with incised lines (below).

The picture shows the knife as it was lifted from the ground on Thursday (9 Sept).
