The dig finished officially on 24 September, but some excavation and recording was required after that date. We have been severely hampered by the weather this year, particularly in the latter stages. The picture below shows the gate area (north is up!). The south structure is better preserved and shows as a small rectangular structure 4x2m in size. This building overlays the previous ditched entrance.

Despite the difficulties there have been some interesting discoveries. The gatehouse area has yielded up many more finds than other areas, which in itself has been surprising. The ditch running north from the entrance contained several almost whole pots including a Samian dish and a Severn Valley Ware beaker. (below)
The most surprising discoveries of the last few days were some military fittings from two different areas.
The crescent shaped hinged fitting (pictured above) was found in the entrance ditch and the stud, possibly a late Iron Age helmet fitting (as identified by Mike Fulford) was found in the inner ditch south of the well.
Work will continue on the gate area next year and surveys will continue throughout the winter months.
