Excavation 2004
Excavation at Blacklands near Frome, Somerset.
The Bath and Camerton Archaeological Society is to run a fourth year at Blacklands, near Frome in Somerset. The project is likely to be long running and will offer training opportunities in archaeological fieldwork.
The site to be worked on this year is the continuation of a Romano-British enclosure and buildings, discovered by geophysical survey in 1999. The trench opened in 2001 will be extended and more detailed excavation of features found last year will be investigated. There will be opportunities to try geophysical prospecting during the project.
The Excavation
The excavation will run from Monday 16th August to Friday 24th September 2004. The training course will operate over a week (5 days) and enrolment on a weekly basis will be preferable although single days may be available, subject to space. The course will be taught by Jayne Lawes, an experienced professional field archaeologist researching Romano-British settlement in the area. It will cover all aspects of excavation and will be very practically based with plenty of opportunity to take part in the excavation of the site. A detailed outline will be supplied. The course will cost £90 per week (tuition fees only). The day fee will be £25. Most equipment is supplied, except a 4 inch pointing trowel, which you will have to provide. (It may be possible to remain for further weeks or days as a volunteer, more details on request.) A deposit of £25 will be required with booking.
Location of the Site
The site is found 10 miles south of Bath and 6 miles north of Frome. The site is quite remote and maps will be supplied on application. A list of local accommodation will be provided, with limited camping space available near the site. Unfortunately there is no public transport to the site, the nearest bus route is approximately 2 miles away, but arrangements may be made to help transport people. There is ample off-road parking.
